Spotlight - Anglo-Saxon Manuscript Drawings

This month Spotlight takes a look, via a free public lecture from Dr Sally Dormer at Gresham College, at drawings in Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. This isn't an area that receives a whole lot of attention, so it's quite interesting to take some time to hear about approaches to the medium in relation to the time-period.

The lecture is embedded here:

Or you can watch it on YouTube HERE.

Upcoming - Photography with Jefferson Hammond

On Thursday 2nd June we welcome photographer Jefferson Hammond LRPS to talk about 'The Art and Craft of Photography'.

Ahead of time, Jefferson has sent along this description of his talk:

"The question of whether photography is art or not will probably rage for eternity although through this I presentation I hope that I can illustrate how "photography", separate from that actual art work itself, should be seen as an artistic process. Based around by own personal approach to photography, this presentation  explores how a more traditional approach to photography is still important to the images I produce and how the basic art and craft of photography has largely remained unchanged despite the advances in digital imaging."

Thanks to Anne Fox for putting together the poster for the event:

Hope to see you on 2nd June, where we'll also be displaying the results of May's Monthly Draw topic, 'The Next Stage of Human Evolution', and asking you to help us pick our next topic.

LAS Fringe - 2016 Paint Jam!

Remember the Paint Jam from the last two Fringe Festivals? Well, it's coming back and this year's line-up of artists is excellent. On Saturday 18th June, from 10am-4pm, artists will be working live in Castle Square, mostly creating art on large wooden boards, and there'll be a Public Board which anyone and everyone is encouraged to come along and doodle on (pens will be provided).

The LAS has a particularly strong showing this year, with Samuel Bebb, Tom Crowe, Steve Fox, John Jarvis, George Loades and Jean Simnett all taking part! There's also going to be world-famous cartoonist Charlie Adlard (best known for his work on the long-running comics series The Walking Dead which spawned a huge US TV run) lending his talents to the day.

In addition to this, there'll be 'Create with Clay', a free session of guided clay modelling that's suitable for all ages!

Here's the poster for the event (slightly edited from the one you may see around town due to post-printing changes to the roster):

Mailing List Change

We're making a slight change to the way we use our mailing list - if your membership lapses at the end of a year we currently keep on sending you information for a couple of months, until our March AGM, but we're changing this to so you'll receive messages for twelve months after lapsed membership.

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for exciting LAS Fringe news coming up soon!

Ludlow Open Artist Development in 2016

Ludlow Open Artist Development is back in 2016, with a series of three workshops to designed to strengthen art practice outside the studio.

The locally presented half day workshops are offered to all artists living/working in The Marches (Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire).

From the website:

We are delivering two series of 3 half day workshops throughout 2016.  These can be attended individually or as a complete series, depending on your interest and schedule.  Workshops are subsidised by funding from Arts Council England, costing just £10 each.  Places are limited so please book in advance to confirm your place.

The workshops are delivered by Jo King, Director of Ludlow Open.  Jo has over ten years experience of coaching artists, setting up exhibitions and applying for funding and commissions.  Since curating the first Open in Ludlow in 2008 Jo has worked with hundreds of artists, and has developed LOAD as a response to artist requests for advice, representation and support.  Artist development events take place throughout the country, but for those working in The Marches there is limited provision, and artists spend valuable time and money travelling some distance to gain professional advice.  LOAD has been developed for regional artists as a response to local need, and we are grateful to The Arts Council for responding to this need by funding these events, keeping costs low.

You can find all the details on the LOAD website HERE.

Upcoming - Plein Air at Burford Gardens

This coming Saturday (May 21st) we are getting together for our first plein air trip of the year.

We'll meet at Burford Gardens between 10am and 10.30am, work for a couple of hours before breaking for lunch in the café between 1pm and 1.30pm and carrying on after - but please don't worry if you can't turn up until later, just find the people with the art materials!

I won't be able to get to this one, but if you can I hope you have a great time.

Pictures from Ron Law's Talk

Ron gave us a fantastic talk and demo on his approach to pencil, ink and wash pieces, starting with a pencil sketch and taking it all the way to a finished piece during the demo - his subject was a Ludlow street scene, looking down King Street. He also brought along some of his stunning sketchbooks which dated back to 1995, and we saw the first use of the camera-projector setup (we had a few technical issues with this which I am happy to say we have been able to fix).

Here are some pictures from the evening (click to enlarge):

We also saw some fascinating submissions for our Monthly Draw topic, 'Musical Conductor', as well as drawing the topic for June's meeting - 'The Next Stage of Human Evolution.'

Next month, on June 2nd, we have photographer Jefferson Hammond giving us a talk on the art and craft of photography.

Catherine Downes, The Sketches

LAS Member Catherine Downes has brought out a book of her artwork! She says:

I have brought out a book of my sketches , called Catherine Downes, The Sketches.
It is published by TnT-Photoart, printed by Gomer Press.
It is a beautifully presented hardback of 80 pages with illustrations from the sketchbooks of water colourist Catherine Downes BA.
Sketches such as these display a spontaneity and life often not present in finished paintings. Normally never seen but a delight to browse by artists and non artists alike.
I was trained as a glass designer and engraver in Stourbridge. Ending up owning my own glass studio at our garden centre in Staffordshire. I returned to my first love and took up drawing and painting again in 1980's. I eventually entered Wolverhampton Uni to gain my BA in Fine Art.
Moving to Much Wenlock in 2004 I started exhibiting with local art societies. This year I have been chosen as Church Stretton's Featured Artist for their 50th anniversary exhibition. This book fulfils a lifelong ambition.
It is on sale at The Castle Bookshop on the square in Ludlow.  Price £18.99

Catherine has very kindly given permission to use some snippets from her book (click to enlarge), but if you want to see the intricacies of it you'll have to go by the book in town :)

Spotlight - Tamara de Lempicka, the Complete Works

Young Lady With Gloves, 1930

April's (slightly belated) Spotlight takes a look at the complete works of Polish Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka, "Influenced by Cubism, Lempicka became the leading representative of the Art Deco style across two continents, a favorite artist of many Hollywood stars, referred to as 'the baroness with a brush'. She was the most fashionable portrait painter of her generation among the haute bourgeoisie and aristocracy, painting duchesses and grand dukes and socialites.

Spring Exhibition 2016 our 70th Anniversary Year

Despite the short time scale to organise and hang the Spring Exhibition 2016, this is a great Exhibition in Ludlow Art Society’s 70th Anniversary year.

Thanks should go both to members, who entered an enormous range of subject and media, spanning a price range from £10.00 to £1500.00, but mostly to the Committee, Exhibition sub committee and hanging group, who organised, set up and hung such a fantastic show after dealing with very many set backs, and seemingly insurmountable problems, along the way.

There follows a selection of the exhibits available to see but I did have great difficulty in photographing many works, due to my inability to take the shots straight on, or avoid reflections of windows and lights on the paintings, and my apologies go to the artists for some of the photographs which really do not do justice to your work.  The best I can say is that this is just a taster and a visit is vital to see the work at it’s best.
