2015 Ludlow Fringe Live Paint Jam

We did this last year, and we're doing it again here! On Saturday 13th June, in Castle Square, an LAS \ Fringe event is kick-starting the Fringe Festival - we've got artists working large-scale on boards, we've got artists working plein air around the town, we've got a caricaturist, we have a face-painter, and we have a public board for anyone to add their mark to. All the details are on the flyer below, which you may have seen around town.

The Ludlow Art Society is not only running this event but is also represented at it by Samuel Bebb, John Jarvis, George Loades, Jean Simnett and myself (and you may notice that Chris Bean, who runs the Friday Group, is a returning Jam artist from last year).
Jam flyer - click to enlarge!
In addition, while all this is going on there's also Theatre on the Square taking place just beside us, with puppetry, theatre, and African drumming.

It would wonderful to see LAS members on the day, adding your drawings to the public board (marker pens provided).

Once the day is over, the artwork will be installed as part of the town-wide Art Trail, with the boards going to the Ludlow Brewery and the Mascall Centre. Then, at the end of the Fringe, there'll be an auction for the work.

See you there!

Spotlight - 4 Artists Paint 1 Tree

This month, Spotlight brings you a short Disney educational film from 1958 - '4 Artists Paint 1 Tree'.

Essentially, this is a brief look at the individualistic styles these four men had developed, and how, despite them all looking at the same subject, they all chose to focus on different aspects of it and allowed that focus to inform their work.

Here's the video, embedded in this blog:

If you know of any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to - please note that this isn't for self-promotion.

Friday Group Plein Air Trips

I'm a little behind with this, I'm afraid - a few have already taken place, but there are still lots to come! The plein air trips are open to Friday Group (the life drawing group) attendees, but anybody interested in their summer trips should get in touch with Chris Bean, all details given on the following page:

Plein air on 4th June - ALTERATION, now on 11th

Our planned painting trip on 4th June has gone through a number of alterations - it's now on Thursday 11th June.

As for location, it's a place called Holmcroft, Brimfield, near Ludlow, SY8 4NW. It's owned by Mr and Mrs Michael, and it's being specially opened up to the LAS from 11am. Normally there's an entry fee but (I believe) not for us this time, however donations to the National Gardens Scheme are most welcome.

It's 4 miles south of Ludlow, 6 miles north of Leominster. From Ludlow or Leominster leave the A49 at the Salway Arms PH, turn into lane signed Wyson only. From Tenbury Wells cross the A49 into Wyson Lane.

Now, for some details - there's a thatched cottage set in terraced gardens of 3/4 acre, quintessential cottage garden planting - roses, herbaceous borders, kitchen, gravel and woodland gardens all with spectacular views of surrounding countryside. Only the woodland walk is inaccessible for wheelchairs.

It sounds fantastic, hopefully the weather will be fine, and we can get a good number of us out there painting on the 11th!

Thank you to Lesley Connolly for organising the event.

Pictures from Dulcie Fulton's Talk

Dulcie brought an impressive amount of kit with her! She explained how letterpress pieces are created, how they'd been used in the past, and brought lots of creative examples of cards that could be created using this method (taking in, beyond composition and typography, origami, text-based art and highly-patterned printing created with 3d-printed letters). She put together a text-based bookmark design, and we could all have a try at printing our own!

Some pictures from the evening (click to enlarge) :

Next month... it's the Ludlow Fringe! Before that, we have a plein air day on 4th June, this will most likely be at Brimfield, where there's a 17th century thatched cottage, rose beds and herbaceous borders. We'll have confirmation very soon, so keep an eye out!

Our next meeting will be an addition to the programme, and it'll be on 18th June in Oscars (still in the Assembly Rooms) - Tom Crowe will lead a talk on the exciting new Fringe event GPS Art Competition (there are prizes to be won with this event!). Again, details will be coming up very, very soon!

Don't forget to to download forms for the Art Trail and the Art Market - links at the top in 'What's On'.

LAS Fringe Exhibitions!

With just about a month to go until the 2015 Ludlow Fringe begins, we're putting out a reminder call for artwork!

The first event is very exciting, as it's an LAS Art Trail exhibition in St Laurence's Church, which from 2016 will be the regular venue for our Spring and Summer shows - but this is an opportunity to get in on the first of our shows in the Church! Not only that, but the entrance fee is £8 instead of the regular Art Trail fee of £10 - for that, you may exhibit as many pictures as you like for the three-week event, and the regular restrictions on not showing work that has been previously exhibited with the LAS do not apply here.

All you need to do is print out this form (and ignore the 1st May deadline date, that Fringe have changed that - as long as we have your details in hand by the hanging date of 11th June, you can exhibit) and make sure you state your Affiliation is Ludlow Art Society. Please note: for the Art Trail exhibition, we are unable to take cards (but rest assured we'll be displaying them again at our Summer Exhibition in August!).

-----     -----     -----

The second event is a return to last year's Artists' Market stall on Castle Square. We're doing the same thing we did last year - our stall is on for two days, the 20th and 21st of June, and for £1 per picture you can put any unframed work (browsers, box canvases, etc, but not cards) up for sale. There's no commission so you take 100% of any sales, and once again there are no restrictions on showing previously-exhibited work.

Now, surrounding the LAS' pitch will be a host of other artists' stalls, and nearby there'll be some screeving taking place just outside the College, so Castle Square will be busy, bustling and full of art!

-----     -----     -----

Finally, the Fringe Art Trail is in need of volunteers to help curate and steward the various venues around the town, and who better than members of the Ludlow Art Society? I'll be pitching in, and if you'd like help out then please drop the Art Trail organisers, Frances Clarke and Frances Newman, an email at and

Keep an eye on this blog for further information about the LAS and the Fringe!

LAS in the Ludlow Ledger!

We've been featured in an article in the latest edition (May / June) of the Ludlow Ledger! It's on p18, so go check it out - copies are available for free in various locations around the town.

Note: some editorial changes were made after the letter was submitted to the Ledger by LAS Secretary Pat Innes, and these have resulted in some inaccuracy. To clarify, while the idea of the inclusion of digital art was mine, the idea of including cards was not mine but had in fact been in discussion for some time. Also, due to the time between the article being written and it being published, the SmArt group (which we sponsored to get it up and running, but not on a permanent basis as the article suggests) is no longer running.

Don't forget, we have our Fringe exhibitions (three-weeks as part of the Art Trail, and a two-day selling stall as part of the Art Market) coming up fast! Ignore the deadline date of 1st May for the Trail, put your Affiliation down as 'Ludlow Art Society' and get involved with any number of pictures for £8  - a 20% discount!
