Spotlight - Transferring Drawings

This month, Spotlight's going to look at the technical side of taking your drawing and transferring it onto your painting surface.

On the Underpaintings blog, Matthew D Innis discussed various methods for achieving the transfer:

Also on Underpaintings, you can see artist David Gray's process for the oil transfer method :

Artist Donato Giancola prefers to print a copy of his original drawing, then seal the copy to a panel using acrylic matte medium:

Finally (and there is some repeated information), Watercolorists of Whatcom cover various methods:

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to - please note that this isn't for self-promotion.

Shropshire Hills Art Week Redux!

We've mentioned it before, but the deadline for entering Shropshire Hills Art Week is approaching, and the organiser, Jules, has sent along this email:

Full information is on the website and the closing date for artists to sign up is 30th March.

Shropshire Hills Open Studios 31 May to 8 June 2014

•    Open your studio: exhibit and sell your work
•    Exposure via colour art trail maps
•    A year-round online presence at
•    Become part of new community of artists
•    Supported by Natural England

We'd love to have some of the Ludlow Art Society on board with an open studio. If this is of interest, do give me a call or email. I realise this is short notice for the deadline, so as an incentive, there are some special offers available. If not this year, perhaps you might be interested next year.

Best wishes,

If you're concerned about the dates, it looks good sitting between the LAS Spring Exhibition (11th - 21st April) and the Fringe Festival (14th June - 6th July) so there are no clashes.

Please note - this is nothing to do with the Ludlow Fringe.

Pictures from the AGM

It was a reasonably well-attended evening, and it was decided not to charge entry for this or any future AGMs. A number of good suggestions were made, which the Committee will discuss at their next meeting. The Committee itself has changed slightly - I have taken the position of chairman, with the previous incumbent, Alan Hobbs, becoming vice chairman. You can see the complete lineup here. Also, Val Alexander has announced that after this year she will step down as publicity secretary.

The bring and buy was well received, with a number of people offering materials they weren't going to use. Perhaps unsurprisingly, oil paints and pastels were among the more popular items.

Quite a few people brought pictures to talk about, and you can see some of them below:

Next month, on April 3rd, it's a demo and talk on street art from Mike Flight, a former teacher at Kidderminster College. See you there!

Reminder - AGM

A quick reminder - tonight is our AGM, 7pm for 7.30pm, Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Along with the usual business, we also have a 'Bring and Buy' of unwanted art materials; bring anything you no longer need, we ask a donation to the Art Society for anything you take away.

In addition, we invite members to bring along a piece of their work to briefly talk about after the meeting. Show us all what you've been up to!

See you there!
