Spotlight - Jean-Léon Gérôme

This month, Spotlight takes a look at the Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme.

Frenchman Gérôme was a highly capable sculptor, oil painter and teacher at the height of the Academic tradition, and he exhibited several times at the Salon.

BBC Amateur Artist Competition

Are you an amateur artist? Well then, this may be of interest to you! This came through courtesy of Jean Simnett - cheers, Jean!

Note: this is not just for SAA members, but any amateur artists.

Stencil Masterclass

Now this is a little different - on Saturday, over at the Boar's Head Gallery in Kidderminster (inside the Boar's Head pub, DY10 1EW), there's a chance to try your hand at stencil cutting and spraying with artist Melo.

You can find all the details on Facebook here:

As stated, you do need to book and you do need to bring a picture to turn into a stencil - original art's not recommended (a scanned print is best) as it may be damaged in the process.

Delbury Hall Spring Art Show

Spring Art Show Delbury Hall 22nd - 23rd March 2014

The Spring Art Show will be held at Delbury Hall, Diddlebury, Craven Arms over the weekend of the 21-23 March 2014 (Preview night on the 21st March) and will raise funds for Cancer Research, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and St Peters Church, Diddlebury through the sale of artworks.

It will follow the same format and involves many of the same team who organised The Spring Art Show at Lyde Arundel, Hereford, 3 years ago which raised £30,000 for Maggies Cancer Centres.  The event starts with a ticketed private preview evening on Friday 21st March with champagne donated by Pol Roger and an auction of art-related lots conducted by ex Christies guest auctioneer Humphrey Butler.

There will be about 25 artists: a mix of painters, photographers, sculptors and ceramicists, some locally known and some working and exhibiting in London and around the country.  They have all agreed to donate 25% of any sales to be divided equally between the three charities.  Prices will range between £50-£5000.

Pictures from Frans Wesselman's Talk

Frans was a fascinating speaker - he showed some of his artwork prior to tackling stained glass, detailed how he got into stained glass work, and described the process he went through to create the eight pieces for Godiva Awakes.

Here are some pictures from the evening (click to enlarge):

Next month, on 6th March, we have our AGM. However, this one's a little different - firstly, we're running a 'tips and tricks' section where we invite LAS members to bring along a piece of work and briefly talk about it. Secondly, we have a raffle! Dave Tedham has quite a few art supplies that he's donating to the LAS, and we thought the best thing to do would be to give you a chance to win them! Finally, our Chairman, Alan Hobbs, will be stepping down from his role and taking on the position of Vice Chairman.

The LAS Goes Back To School

We took a trip to Hereford Cathedral School today to see their head of art, Colin Wilkes, who gave us a tour of the facility and explained his teaching methods and philosophy to us.

Take a look at some examples of the students' work (and a shot of one of the reference material shelves):

Many thanks to the school for throwing their doors open to us, and preparing freshly-baked cookies!

Don't forget, we're meeting on Thursday evening for a talk from stained glass artist Frans Wesselman - see you there!
