Little Hereford Painting Challenge!

This looks fun! Jean Simnett is organising a Painting Challenge at the Little Hereford Fete this year. Here are the details:

Three designated sites are available for painting as shown on the attached plan.  It is necessary to restrict painting to these areas to avoid congestion and possible health and safety risks.  The designated areas are “Poolside”, “Garden” and “Parkland”.

Painting is from 11.00 on Saturday 10th August and you may register between 10.45 and 13.00 in the Coach House on the day, or before with Jean Simnett.

The cost of entry is £2 which also includes entry to the fete.  An entry number will be allocated on registration and this must be shown on all paintings entered for judging.  Additional paintings will be accepted from each artist for judging at an added cost of £1 each.  All paintings entered must have been completed at the Fete.

Paintings are to be presented at the Coach House before 15.00 for judging by a panel of three judges.  The judge’s decisions are final.

The fete does not provide any materials or equipment and these should be brought along by the artist.   Painting can take place in three designated places in the grounds and around Easton Court, which is the home of Sir Richard and Lady Jennifer Llloyd, and which is off the A456 in Little Hereford (well signposted on the day). The fete starts at 14.00 on Saturday 10th August but painters taking part can start at 11.00 and should finish at 15.00.  Three judges will then judge the entries and prizes will be awarded at 16.00.

Paintings may be offered for sale, and if a sale is made a donation to the fete of 20% of the sale price is suggested.

Please complete the attached form and either return it to Jean Simnett with your entry fee or bring it along to register at the Coach House.

Good luck.

Upcoming - um... everything!

Well, okay, maybe not everything, but certainly there's a lot coming up over the next month or so - plenty to keep you busy. If you like wandering around exhibitions, if you like socialising, if you like urban art, if you like plein air painting or if you're interested in a painting workshop, there's something for you! Here's a quick run-down of what's going on in Ludlow, and one or two events in nearby towns:

Exhibitions at Silk Top Hat and Assembly Rooms - there's always an exhibition of something at both Silk Top Hat and the Assembly Rooms. Check out "What's On" at the top of this blog for details and dates.

Tom Crowe's paintings at The Clive - from 20th July, LAS Treasurer Tom Crowe is exhibiting some of his iPad paintings. If you're out that way, take a look!

Plein Air - tomorrow (12th), the Friday Group is out at Croft Castle; this Saturday (13th) the LAS is out at Leintwardine; the Friday Group is then at Brampton Bryan Park and village on the 19th, and on the 26th has its last plein air of the year at Bishops Castle; the LAS then has one final plein air session at the Bromfield Food Centre on August 3rd. LAS dates can be found in the Programme, button to the right; Friday Group dates can be found in the link at the bottom of "What's On".

Shrewsbury Sketch Club - every fortnight, on Sunday afternoon 2-4pm, a small and friendly group meets in the Shrewsbury Coffeehouse. Everyone's welcome, and there's often a specific activity if you'd like to try it, if not you're invited to just sketch. Everybody's welcome, just ask for Steve Lovejoy and say Sam from Ludlow sent you!

August Art! Squad - this one's great fun. On the first Wednesday of every month, in the Shrewsbury Coffeehouse from 7-9pm Art! Squad  runs. Each month you're invited to bring along a piece of work on a theme, and the winner gets their piece hung in the gallery for a month - this month's theme is 'sea', so seascapes, seasides, mermaids, pirates, etc are all possibilities! There are also mini-tasks to have a go at, with smaller prizes on offer. Everyone's welcome - ask for Pip, and again say Sam from Ludlow sent you!

Summer Schools - have you signed up for these yet? With workshops for Life Painting (12th-14th August), Portrait (19th-21st August), and Still Life 27th-29th August), these are 3-day courses run in the Museum Resource Centre. All details can be found in the "What's On" section above.

Above Boards Paint Jam - a two-day event during the Kidderminster Arts Festival and hosted by the Boar's Head Gallery, this takes place on 10th and 11th August. Regional and national artists will be there, painting on large boards outside the Gallery, on panels that are boarding up nearby buildings, and there'll be more artists at work down in the subways. There'll also be an exhibition of work from the artists in the gallery itself. Both LAS Committee Member Lesley Connolly and I will be painting for this event - come along and say "Hi"!

LAS Summer Exhibition - you all know this one! 17th-26th August, with a preview on the evening of 16th. Deadline for submitting entry forms is 1st August!

If there's something I've missed, and it's not covered in "What's On", drop me a line at and I'll make sure to cover it!

Pictures from Karen Van Hoff's talk

Karen brought along a large selection of her work - mostly jewellery constructed in a variety of ways, but also some paintings, and also explained the rather roundabout way she got into jewellery making. Here are some pictures from the evening (click to enlarge):

We don't have a speaker for August, as it's out second annual Exhibition (details in What's On, at the top of the blog). However, coming up on July 13th we have another plein air day, out at Leintwardine. The backup location in the event of bad weather is the Sun Inn, which also serves as a muster point for the day and a possible venue for lunch!

Beginning this weekend - Shrewsbury Open Studios!

On 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th July the Shrewsbury Open Studios event takes place. Basically, a lot of working artists are opening their studios and inviting the public in. With an incredible variety of talents to see, it's well worth going along! Please note that some artists are only opening for one of the two weekends.

You can find more information on the Open Studios website:
