SmArt Press Information

"Eight year-old Kyle Taylor has taken first prize in the smArt entries at this year’s Ludlow Art Society Spring Exhibition.

Kyle and the other children from SmArt – the Saturday morning kids’ arts and crafts club run by Tanith Kinton at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms – were all invited by LAS to submit entries for a special display based on an armorial theme.

In addition to creating individual designs for medieval coats of arms and native American medicine shields, the children – who range in age from 8 to 14 – were all encouraged to also produce a short description of the creative thought behind their designs.

Kyle’s winning entry was entitled “Majestic Eagle”.  His description was, “Birds are beautiful and graceful.  I wanted to make the eagle look fantastic flying in the sky.  I enjoyed using feathers to make him come to life”.

The LAS Spring Exhibition – which was held in Ludlow’s Harley Centre – showed off a large selection of original work in various mediums by society members.
Almost 600 people visited the exhibition and saw not only the smArt display, but also the 270 paintings, sculptures and items of etched glassware that were on show. The SmArt club entries were judged by Marc Soubyran, who also performed the official opening ceremony."

Ros Garratt workshops

Ros Garratt, who gave us a talk earlier this month, is offering workshops covering the art of lino cutting. Here's what she had to say:

"I could manage max 2 pupils at once and would include lunch.
We could work on choosing the right kind of image or adapting previous sketches to be suitable, preparing the lino and registration board, and cutting and working in 2 tones to produce a completed image - that would be enough for 1 day.
Working with more that one colour would be another day.

The cost would be £50 a day per person.
I also have a B&B room here so that could be another option for a 2 day course if people fancied a 2 day experience just outside Hay."

LAS Spring Exhibition 2012 - Results for Favourite Entries

As with our last Exhibition, we asked visitors to the Spring 2012 show to vote for their favourite pictures. The votes have now been tallied, with Val Alexander taking both first and second places with 'Snow by the River Corve, Ludlow' and 'Path of Whitcliffe, Ludlow'. Taking third place was George Loades, with 'Robin Hood's Bay'.

Also, one person's voting card was picked at random, with that person winning something by their chosen favourite artist - Pam Barclay's card was drawn, with Martin Dutton being her favourite artist. Three of his cards are on their way to her.

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who took the time to vote!

Pictures from Ros Garratt's talk

Ros brought with her a series of slides, as well as some sketchbooks and the tools she uses to create her landscapes - after explaining her methods, and passing around some of the materials, we were invited to try the cutting tools on a piece of lino.

Next month, on 7th June, we have a Celebrity Talk given by Geoff Tristram.
