Spring and Jubilee Exhbition Forms Now Online

If you head over to the 'Membership and Exhibition' forms page (link), you'll find detail and entry forms for our upcoming exhibitions. You should have received these forms in the post along with our Newsletter, but if they've got lost somewhere you can download and print them out.

Firstly we have our usual Spring Exhibition, but this year we also have a special Jubilee Exhibition, to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

Spotlight - Math and the Art of M. C. Escher

'Math', as the source is American.

This site is actually an online college-level textbook. Escher's work is given as an example in many cases, but the focus is far more on the mathematics of patterns rather than a gallery of work by the artist.

Here's the link:

If you know any great art websites or articles, why not share them here? Send your suggestions to - please note that this isn't for self-promotion!

Committee Update

Jean Simnett has taken over from Pat Innes as Membership Secretary with immediate effect, as Pat, who was going to continue with the job until the AGM, is now unable to do so. If you have any questions about the LAS, or are interested in joining, you'll need to address your queries to Jean, whose details are now on the updated Membership Form.

Thanks to Jean for stepping in so quickly.

Life Drawing Vacancies

The Friday Life and Portrait group has a few places open, so if anybody (LAS members or otherwise) is interested in having a go then here's your chance!

For anyone unfamiliar with it, here are some more details:

There are always 2 models to choose between - one for life, one for portrait. Each model is usually around for 3 consecutive Fridays, the portrait model holding the same position for the 3 days. The life model usually takes quicker poses (5 - 30 minutes is common) in the morning, with longer poses in the afternoon. The sessions are untutored, and drinks and biscuits are available during the break (one in the morning, the other in the afternoon). You'll need to bring your own materials.

Details of when it's running can be found in the 'What's On' box at the top of this page.

I drop in every now and then - maybe I'll see you there!

2012 AGM - new positions available!

At our AGM, on 1st March, the LAS will be looking to fill three positions on its Committee:

1) Pat Innes has stepped down as Membership Secretary, so we'll need someone to take up the post immediately. Many thanks for all the work you've done for us, Pat, and we wish you all the best!

We're also looking for members to take up the posts of 2) organising the Programme and 3) organising the Exhibitions, as Lesley Connolly and Ruth Tune intend to step down from these duties at the end of this year.

If you're interested and would like to help out, you're very welcome to turn up and put your name forward.

As usual at our AGMs, there'll be wine and snacks on offer, and this time we'll also have a quiz!

Short Stone Carving Course

In April, there's a 3-day workshop on stone carving being held near Oswestry - not the sort of thing that turns up too often, so if you're curious it's worth taking a look! All details are on the flyer below (click to enlarge):

Pictures from Moira Gibbs' talk

Moira gave us a fascinating history of Chinese painting, explaining the materials used and why certain known techniques such as vanishing points and chiaroscuro were most often disregarded. She also brought along some ink and brushes for us to have a go ourselves!

Next month, we have our AGM.

Keith Noble and Joan Baker Exhibition

Bishop's Castle is having a 4 day Arts Festival from 16th - 19th February, and Joan Baker and LAS President Keith Noble are showing some paintings in the showroom of a handmade oak furniture company on the Market Square (top of the town).

The link below gives details of the Arts Festival starting on Thursday 16th, and if you follow it and then click each day in the left hand column it has further details of "What’s On" during the Festival. Keith is manning the exhibition on the 16th, and after that he and Joan will be taking it in turns (but it's not fixed which days Keith or Joan will be there on the 17th, 18th and 19th).

I haven't been there myself, but according to Keith, The Three Tuns pub, again at the top of the town, is a good place to have lunch (with the fish and chips with home brewed Three Tuns beer batter coming highly recommended!).

Here's the flyer for the event (click to enlarge):
