Charles MacCarthy -
'For some time now there has been a close affinity between religion and the arts at St Michael’s Church, Discoed, with many concerts, poetry readings and exhibitions. This year is the fifth Lent Exhibition and its title, ’40 Days, 40 Artists’, refers to the 40 days that Christ spent in the wilderness.
We invited forty artists to respond to themes from the Passion, divided into ten traditional subjects which describe the events immediately before and after the Crucifixion as well as the Crucifixion itself. Each of these ten subjects has therefore been interpreted by four different artists, taking their inspiration not only from their allocated title but also from a work of art chosen from among the 'Old Masters'.

When invited to take part, artists often said, "But I’m not religious", or even, "I’m an atheist" but in the end I think this non-pious approach has produced good results. The worlds of art and religion have for ever been intertwined, and as Wittgenstein said, "The best interpretation of a work of art is another work of art." The response from these artists has been tremendous and wholehearted.'

The participating artists are:
